Prophesies of the Two Messiahs
by Rav Sha'ul

The prophets foretold of “two Messiah” very different in their role.  They foretold of a suffering servant who would die (The Messiah ben Joseph) and of a conquering King (Messiah ben David) who would liberate Jerusalem.   These “two versions of the Messiah” were foreshadowed by the Spring Festivals and the Fall Festivals.  Yahusha assured John that it was one Messiah who would come twice not two Messiahs.  John wasn’t questioning Yahusha’s role as Messiah, he had personally trained Yahusha as the Zadok High Priest and knew Yahusha was at least the Messiah ben Joseph.   No one knew at that point if there was supposed to be one Messiah who comes twice or two Messiahs as the prophets did not specify.

The Apostle Paul understood this and explained Yahusha’s role as the final human High Priest in the order of Zadok

Hebrews 5

The Perfect High Priest

1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to Yahuah, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2 he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4 And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by Yahuah, even as Aaron was. 5 So also (like Aaron) Yahusha did not glorify himself so as to become a high priest, but He (Yahuah) who said to Him

"YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU";

6 just as He says also in another passage,

"YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."

7 In the days of Yahusha’s flesh (when he was but human), He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One (God, Yahuah, The Shema) able to save him from death, and Yahusha was heard because of His piety (obedience to The Law Zachariah Chapter 3). 8 Although He was a Son, Yahusha learned obedience (to the ONE GOD) from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect (Yahusha was not born perfect being simply a man), Yahusha became (he was not always, he BECAME after his submission and death on Passover) to all those who obey Yahuah the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by Yahuah as a high priest (from among men verse 1) according to the order of Melchizedek (bloodline witness). 11 Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

We are presented with what could be two Messiahs or one who comes twice.  The two Messiahs in prophecy are known as The Messiah ben Joseph and The Messiah ben David.  Yahuah gave us His Ordained Times which define the role the Messiah at each advent.  It is called The Feast Cycle.  Each festival is a celebration of what Yahusha came to do and is coming back to do according to The Plan of Salvation of Yahuah:

·       The Sabbath – a weekly celebration of the coming of The King of the Sabbath Millennium to lift the curse of Adam and give us rest!

The Spring Festivals a rehearsal for The Messiah ben Joseph

·       The Passover - an annual celebration of our salvation through the blood of the Passover Lamb Yahusha.  It is when we “re-affirm our commitment to the New Covenant” by drinking the cup and keeping alive the memory of his sacrifice.  It is when we through our actions offer up the sacrifice of Passover to Yahuah and the blood of the lamb is poured out over our hearts (his Altar) and our sins are forgiven.

·       The Feast of First Fruits – an annual celebration of Yahusha ascending to our Father and offering up the first fruits from the grave.  It us the celebration of the resurrection, our being begotten as sons of Yahuah.

·       The Feast of Shav’uot – an annual celebration of the giving of The Torah and the pouring out of The Spirit of Holiness that writes it on our hearts and teaches us to keep in it love.

The Fall Festivals a rehearsal for The Messiah ben David

·       The Feast of the Blowing of the Shofar – an annual celebration of the second coming of the King.

·       The Day of Atonement – an annual solemn day of retrospection and cleansing of our body temples and purifying of His Altar (our hearts and minds).  On this day we look forward to Yahusha atoning for creation.

·       The Feast of Booths – this is the annual celebration of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb when we are gathered from the 4 corners of Earth to dine with Yahusha on the Mount of Olives.  This is the commencement of The Kingdom of Yahuah on Earth.

Messiah ben Joseph – The Suffering Servant

The Messiah ben Joseph who comes to earth to suffer and die is foretold in Isaiah 53:

Isaiah 53

53 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they[a] made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul,[b] and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

We see from this prophecy in Isaiah (and in Psalm 22) that the Messiah had to come to earth as a human, suffer at the hands of humanity, have the sins of the world placed upon him, and die.  Yahuah gave us the Spring Feast Cycle as a rehearsal for this event leading up to it and as a holy season of remembrance looking back on it.

Messiah ben David – The conquering King

There are many prophecies that speak of the role of Yahusha as conquering King.  The Messiah is then seen coming with authority, power, and a kingdom.

Daniel 7:13-14

13 “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. 14 Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.

We see this return of the King in the Book of Revelation chapter 19:

Revelation 19

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses (these are the clouds Yahusha rides in on). 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations (he judges the nations by the Law of Yahuah). And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

KING OF KINGS AND
RULER OF RULERS.

Yahusha himself spoke of this same event:

Matthew 26

64 “You have said so,” Yahusha replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Summary

Yahusha had to come to Earth as a human to be trained and serve as a human High Priest and make the final sacrifice.  Only once that final sacrifice was made, could Yahusha defeat death.  At that point Yahuah resurrected Yahusha and beget him as a son and give to Yahusha his inheritance.  Once Yahusha was given his inheritance, he was destined in The Plan of Yahuah to come back to Earth and claim it.

This Plan of Yahuah’s to send Yahusha twice, the first time to die and defeat death and the second time as King to claim his inheritance, was revealed through the prophets and through the Feast Cycle.  The prophets foretold of a Messiah ben Joseph or suffering servant who would die and Yahuah gave us the Spring Feasts as a rehearsal for that event.  The prophets also foretold of a Messiah ben David or conquering King and Yahuah gave us the Fall Feasts as a rehearsal for that event to come.

We see through the prophet Joel that the Feast Cycle is a prophetic portrait.  Joel refers to the feast cycle as the “autumn and spring rains” which is seen in this passage of scripture as a “metaphor” for in which The Plan of Yahuah is revealed:

Joel 2

23 Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in Yahuah your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. 24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.

25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten— the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm— my great army that I sent among you. 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of Yahuah your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed. 27 Then you will know (The Shema, His Seal) that I am in Israel, that I am Yahuah your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Yahuah. 32 And everyone who calls on the name of Yahuah will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as Yahuah has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
